Pouilly Fume comes from around the town of Pouilly Sur Loire which is across the river from Sancerre, the other great Sauvignon Blanc appellation of the Loire Valley. The Fume element in the name of the wine is because the aromas and flavours are thought to be smoky in comparison to the drier, leaner Sancerre. This smokiness is very apparent in this very typical example. It is thought that the huge concentration of lime in the soil is responsible for this. With New Zealand now in the same price bracket as this Loire classic, it makes sense to fill your boots while the offer lasts.
