GD Vajra Barolo le Albe 2002
Barolo (and Barbaresco) are the great aristocratic wines of Piedmonte. Barolo evolved in the 18th century. It was the first time that French oeniological techniques had been used in Italy to produce a high quality table wine. The Nebbiolo grape from which it comes, is grown in a small area of particularly fertile land found in the hills around Alba. It can produce high levels of alcohol and tannin necessary for a slow maturing wine. It is this ageing in large oak barrels that gives Barolo its complex and facinating aromas and impressive structure.Often compared with the great Burgundies of France it is justly famous for its balance, elegance and class, its high tannic levels make it a wine to be enjoyed with fine cuisine. This quality enhances the flavour of the food and brings out subtle flavours and sensations.
